Mimicry. How the service works

The Mimicry module in the BeAdmin panel masks VPN traffic so well that a connection is indistinguishable from ordinary internet use by a regular person. It holds up in networks that already block other kinds of VPN traffic, obfuscated protocols included — Mimicry is the strongest traffic masking available in the panel.

The problem Mimicry solves

VPN protocols built to resist detection — including obfuscated ones, like AmneziaWG — can still be recognised and blocked in networks with the harshest censorship policies. Operators there don't need to catch a specific protocol: any connection that doesn't look like ordinary browsing is treated as suspicious and throttled or dropped, no matter how well the VPN traffic itself is disguised.

Mimicry solves that at a different level. Instead of disguising a VPN protocol, it makes the connection itself indistinguishable from how a regular person uses the internet — so there is nothing VPN-shaped left to catch.

ℹ️ Masking is strongest on 443

Keep Mimicry on tcp 443 for the strongest masking. Moving it to a different port still works, but the masking is somewhat weaker.

What Mimicry cannot do

It is worth naming what Mimicry does not promise — confusion here is common.

  • It is not extra-strength encryption. Mimicry's edge is how well the connection is disguised, not a stronger cipher than other VPNs use.
  • It is not Tor or anonymity routing. A tunnel to your own server hides traffic from the local network and the ISP, but the destination server still sees the client's IP. Mimicry does not introduce extra hops or onion routing.
  • It is not invisible to a determined adversary. Passive monitoring that just watches for known VPN patterns won't catch it. An adversary willing to actively investigate your server specifically, rather than just observe traffic passively, can still find other ways to interfere.
  • It is not a guarantee against blocking. If an operator blocks the server's IP address outright, no amount of traffic masking helps — the connection to that address is gone regardless of what it looks like.
  • It is not a way around the law. If VPN usage is restricted or prohibited in your jurisdiction, masking the traffic does not change that. Mimicry is a technical answer to a technical obstacle, not a legal one.

Mimicry in BeAdmin

The Mimicry module in BeAdmin installs in one click and defaults to tcp 443, its recommended port. The panel sets up everything the module needs on its own — there is nothing to edit in configuration files or the command line.

Once installed, the module is ready to go: you have a working VPN immediately, and you can add users and issue connections to them. Each user gets a single configuration — one file and one matching QR code, unlike Amnezia's two client formats — because Mimicry has one client app to support. That app, also called Mimicry, is currently available for Android; Apple (iOS and macOS) and Windows clients are in the final stage of development and launching soon. The panel keeps a cached copy of the installable Android app and serves it directly, with no separate app-store listing yet.

Mimicry only runs on amd64 servers — on other architectures, such as ARM, the module cannot be installed.

When to choose Mimicry

Choose Mimicry when:

  • Your users connect from networks where even obfuscated VPN protocols already get caught and blocked — Mimicry masks the connection well enough to hold up there too.
  • You want the strongest masking available in the panel and are fine keeping the module on 443, its recommended port.
  • Your users can install the Android app today — iOS, macOS, and Windows clients are in the final stage of development and coming soon.

Mimicry is not a good fit when:

  • Your users need an iOS, macOS, Windows, or Linux client today — for now Mimicry ships only an Android app; if that's a blocker, Amnezia or WireGuard are good picks in the meantime.
  • You need multi-hop routing — Mimicry doesn't offer it yet; Amnezia does.

If in doubt — install Mimicry in BeAdmin and try it for free.

If you don't have a server yet, you can get one from our partners — they offer virtual and dedicated servers with the BeAdmin panel pre‑installed.
