Hysteria. Setting up client apps
For this article you'll need a ready hysteria2://… link or QR code — the panel generates them for every Hysteria user, in the expanded row of the list, via the Link and QR code buttons. If you don't have a user yet, start with Hysteria quick start.
Hysteria works with apps that support the Hysteria2 protocol. The built-in VPN client of iOS or Android and the WireGuard app won't do.
Which app to choose
| Platform | Apps |
|---|---|
| Android | Hiddify |
| iPhone and iPad | Hiddify, Streisand |
| Windows | Hiddify, v2rayN |
| macOS | Hiddify, Streisand |
| Linux | Hiddify |
Hiddify (Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux)
Hiddify is available on every platform, and a link is added to it the same way everywhere.
Installing Hiddify
- Android — Hiddify on Google Play.
- iPhone, iPad, and Mac — Hiddify from the App Store.
- Windows — the Hiddify installer.
- Linux —
AppImage,.deb, and.rpmpackages on the Hiddify releases page.
Adding a link to Hiddify
- Copy your
hysteria2://…link from the panel with the Link button. If you're setting up a phone, you can leave the QR code on the panel's screen. - On the home screen (Home) of Hiddify tap "+".
- Tap "Add from clipboard" — the link is added automatically. On a phone you can choose to scan a QR code instead and point the camera at the code on the panel's screen.
- Tap the connect button in the middle of the screen.
Platform specifics
- Android. The system will show a prompt to set up a VPN connection — confirm it.
- iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The system will ask permission to add a VPN configuration — allow it and confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
- Windows. If you turn on TUN mode, which routes all traffic into the tunnel, restart the app with "Reboot as administrator" — without administrator rights TUN won't turn on.
v2rayN (Windows)
The main Windows app besides Hiddify is v2rayN.
- Download the Windows archive from the releases page, unzip it, and run
v2rayN.exe. There's no installer, and none is needed. - Copy your
hysteria2://…link from the panel with the Link button. - In the main v2rayN window press Ctrl+V — the server is added from the clipboard.
- Select the added server in the list and make it active.
- Turn on the system proxy in the v2rayN tray icon menu — without it, system traffic isn't routed into the tunnel even when the app shows a connection. Instead of the system proxy you can turn on TUN mode, but it requires administrator rights.
Streisand (iPhone, iPad, and Mac)
The main app for Apple devices besides Hiddify is Streisand from the App Store. On a Mac it runs only on computers with an Apple chip.
- Install the app from the link above.
- In the expanded user row in the panel, copy the
hysteria2://…link with the Link button, or leave the QR code on screen — you'll need it in the next step. - In the app, tap "+".
- If you copied the link, the configuration is picked up automatically. For the QR code, choose "Scan QRCode" and point the camera at the code on the panel's screen.
- Turn on the VPN for the added profile. The system will ask permission to add a VPN configuration — allow it and confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
Happ (iPhone and Mac)
Happ from the App Store is another client for Apple devices. It connects from the link, but it may not accept the obfuscation parameters in it: the connection is then made without obfuscation, and the provider's DPI may block it. If Obfuscation is turned on in the module and no traffic goes through Happ, use Hiddify or Streisand. With obfuscation off, the link is added as usual: tap "+" in the top-right corner of the home screen and choose to add it from the clipboard.
Checking that the VPN works
Open myip.com in your browser. If everything is set up correctly, the page will show your server's country.
If it doesn't connect
- Check the user and the link. The toggle in the user's row must be on — the link of a disabled user doesn't work. The Slot needed label means the user doesn't fit within the licence limit — see User limit. Links stop working after a change of port or obfuscation, and after the module is uninstalled and installed again from scratch: copy the link from the expanded user row again and add it to the app.
- The provider blocks UDP or QUIC. If the connection fails on one network but works on another — mobile internet instead of home Wi-Fi, say — the provider is most likely blocking QUIC and HTTP/3. Turn on the Obfuscation switch in the module settings — see Hysteria. Managing the module — and give users their links again: once it's on, the old ones stop working. If obfuscation didn't help, turn it off — the earlier links work again.
- Happ and obfuscation. If you use Happ on an iPhone or Mac and obfuscation is turned on in the module, the app may not accept its parameters from the link — see Happ. In that case use Hiddify or Streisand.
- UDP is blocked entirely. If the connection doesn't go through even with obfuscation, while Xray or Mimicry work on the same network, UDP isn't let through there at all. Hysteria can't help on such a network: use Xray or Mimicry — they run over TCP, on port
443by default. - The port is taken. If port
443is taken and the service won't start, install the module on port2053: enter it in the custom installation dialog, or, on an installed module, in the settings, Connection group. After changing the port, give users their links again. - The port is closed at the hosting provider. If your server's provider has its own network firewall, open Hysteria's UDP port in it — its number is shown in the module settings.
⚠️ ISP restrictions
Traffic encryption makes a VPN a reliable way to protect a connection, but in some countries and regions internet providers actively interfere with VPN protocols. Because of this, full availability of the service cannot be guaranteed — regardless of the connection type. If one protocol does not work for you, try another VPN module available in the panel. If none of them work on your network, contact support and we will issue a refund for the license.
